Ship Gantry Crane Simulator

This module simulates a Ship Gantry Container Crane. This crane is permanently mounted on a ship with the trolley boom, which runs athwart ship. This simulation is capable of performing many of the functions performed in real-life operations.

General Characteristics:

  • Realistic control stand, control panel, and operator's chair
  • 3-axis hydraulic motion base that provides sensation of movement and motion, jolts from collisions, crane depression as a heavy load is lifted, bumps from uneven rail gaps, and the many other jolts and vibrations of normal crane operations
  • Instructor's station with display of student view
  • Surround sound effects including engine/motor engaging and disengaging, radio communications with foreman (instructor), wind, collision, and miscellaneous environmental sounds
  • Variable weather conditions including wind (variable speed, direction, and interval), sunny conditions where sun is fixed and shadows are cast realistically, and cloudy conditions with no shadows for depth cueing
  • Real-time photo-textured 3-dimensional graphics
  • Accurate representations of the working environment from the operator's field of view
  • Variety of cargo configurations
  • Accurate weight representation for all cargo loads, crane capacities, and limits

Operating Procedures and Characteristics:

  • Travel of gantry for minor alignment within one hatch
  • Variable speed of gantry up to 90 feet (27 meters) per minute
  • Variable hoist speed 0-200 feet (0-60 meters) per minute
  • Variable trolley speed up to 375 feet (112.5 meters) per minute
  • Cross hatch movement of head
  • Full range of motion between stops on extended gantry jibs
  • Automatic slow down as gantry approaches limits
  • Hoist limit stop 8 feet (2.4 meters) from cable drums with appropriate deceleration
  • Simultaneous hoist and trolley
  • Cutoffs at trolley and hoist limits
  • Trolley and hoist limit switches

Visual Effects and Graphics Display:

  • A forward field of view with approximately 50 degrees of horizontal view
  • Cab rotation, as necessary, for realism and effective training
  • Realistic representations of the operating environment including landscape, cables, loads, crane structure, boom structural members and environmental obstacles
  • Realistic representations of boom and structural members
  • Realistic blind spots appropriate for representations of crane structural members
  • Load swing as a result of collisions with buildings, equipment, or other loads
  • Main wire swing as a result of load swing

Problem Conditions:

  • Avoiding collisions
  • Avoiding twisting (helicopter motion)
  • Monitoring bologna cable during heavy wind conditions
  • Stuck payloads
  • Handling rakes chassis
  • Unbalanced container loads
  • Blocked container locking holes
  • Container hung on chassis (vehicle is lifted)
  • Container hung on deck
  • Twistlock operation failure
  • Twistlock indicator failure
  • Trolley limit switch failure

Summary Reports:

  • Date
  • Start time of simulation
  • End time of simulation
  • Elapsed time of simulation
  • Number and type of loads moved
  • Average moves per hour
  • Number of major collisions
  • Number of minor collisions
  • Total number of collisions
