Twin Lift Dock Gantry Simulator

This module simulates a Dock Gantry Twin-Lift Container Crane. The crane simulated is capable of loading 20-foot containers in tandem or singularly from a ship to the shore and vice versa. The specifications on this crane include variable hoist speed, trolley speed, and hoisting capacity.

General Characteristics:

  • Realistic control stand, control panel, and operator's chair
  • 3-axis hydraulic motion base that provides sensation of movement and motion, jolts from collisions, crane depression as a heavy load is lifted, bumps from uneven rail gaps, and the many other jolts and vibrations of normal crane operations.
  • Instructor's station with display of student view
  • Surround sound effects including engine/motor engaging and disengaging, radio communications with foreman (instructor), wind, collision, and miscellaneous environmental sounds
  • Variable weather conditions including wind (variable speed, direction, and interval), sunny conditions where sun is fixed and shadows are cast realistically, and cloudy conditions with no shadows for depth cueing
  • Real-time photo-textured 3-dimensional graphics
  • Accurate representations of the ship, hatches, dock and water from the operator's field of view

Operating Procedures and Characteristics:

  • Loading and unloading 40 foot containers (to and from deck, hold, or chassis)
  • Removing and replacing the hatch cover
  • Maneuvering into the hold
  • Landing into the hold (monitoring slack cable)
  • Flipper operation (all four, landside, seaside)
  • Use of flipper bypass
  • Twistlock operation
  • Use of twistlock bypass
  • Setting trim and skew adjustments
  • Landing on a chassis
  • Simultaneous hoist and trolley
  • Placing container into hold or on to chassis by placing one end first and then sliding in the other end
  • Loading and unloading containers where stackers are installed on or removed from the deck
  • Returning to the washrack
  •

Optional Procedures and Features:

  • Loading and unloading 20 foot containers - "Russian Stow" version
  • Single lift capability
  • Lock/Unlock lights included on head frame

Visual Effects and Graphics Display:

  • A forward field of view with approximately 50 degrees of horizontal view
  • Realistic representations of crane structural members
  • Load swing as a result of collisions with buildings, equipment, or other loads
  • Main wire swing as a result of load swing

Problem Conditions:

  • Avoiding twisting (helicopter motion)
  • Monitoring bologna cable during heavy wind conditions
  • Container or spreader stuck in hold
  • Hoist overtorque
  • Avoiding damage to containers and vehicles
  • Bouncing off vehicle, dock, or ship
  • Avoiding excessive swing
  • Avoiding collisions
  • Loading or unloading container on raked chassis
  • Hanging up on rails in hold
  • Unbalanced container loads
  • Traffic in lanes
  • Blocked container locking holes
  • Container hung on chassis (vehicle is lifted)
  • Container hung on deck
  • Twistlock operation failure
  • Twistlocks operate by no connection (right or left end)
  • Flipper activation failure
  • Bypassable flipper activation failure
  • Trolley limit switch failure
  • Loading and unloading containers with a gap between containers
  • Loading and unloading where operator is unable to use flippers and there are no cell guides

Summary Reports:

  • Date
  • Start time of simulation
  • End time of simulation
  • Elapsed time of simulation
  • Number and type of loads moved
  • Average moves per hour
  • Number of major collisions
  • Number of minor collisions
  • Total number of collisions
  • Performance plots
