WISE Cargo

Introduction

This is the first program available anywhere which combines the functionality and benefits provided by a classroom based liquid cargo simulator with the ability to be used in any location without any special equipment or instructors.

The program provides a complete integrated environment for the training of personnel in all aspects of the handling of liquid cargoes in ship or shore installations. The system is PC-based and hence when loaded onto a laptop computer will allow complete freedom as to when and how cargo training can be undertaken.

Anticipated benefits for companies who use the new system include:

  • The flexibility to conduct training on board or at any other convenient location
  • Reduction in training costs with an increase in training potential
  • Effective assessment of cargo handling procedures and performance leading to a more commercially competitive fleet/ship operation

The system comprises of detailed simulation models of all the systems relating to the cargo on a particular vessel or plant. This allows the operator full control of all the various items included within such a system including valves, pumps and monitoring equipment. The models are sufficiently detailed to allow all the cargo operations normally undertaken by such vessels to be simulated. (see Liquid/Gas Simulation for details of modeling aspects)

Attached to the model is what has been termed the 'Instructor in a box'. By using 'Artificial Intelligence' this module will monitor all the actions being undertaken by the simulator operator and provide relevant feedback regarding the progress through a particular operation as and when required. The operator then has the ability to obtain extra feedback information from on line procedures / training manuals, or with the option of links into other Computer Based Training material. Once training has been completed the system can be operated with or without the feedback module in operation.

The new product is based on the SAfeCargo Liquid Cargo Simulator developed jointly by Warsash Maritime Centre and Ship Analytics International. SAfeCargo is recognized as being one of the most sophisticated and flexible Liquid Cargo Simulators currently available. The ship or terminal models allow the simulation of all the process flow and control processes applicable to the type of ship or terminal and the cargo being handled, and hence allow operators to be trained in all aspects of handling bulk liquid gas, oil or chemical cargoes. For example using the ship models the operations that can be simulated include all of those undertaken within the usual drydock to drydock period including:

  • Primary Inerting
  • Gassing Up & Cooldown (if appropriate)
  • Loading
  • Discharging
  • Loaded & Ballast voyage
  • Cargo conditioning
  • Gas freeing

Functions are incorporated to enable the loading and running of standard scenarios, the creation of new scenarios, trending and recording of specific parameters and the logging of all operators and their actions so that a detailed performance record for each operator can be gathered.
