WISE Systems

Building on their 25 years experience, both in the use of and the design of simulators for training in the marine field and its highly skilled professional staff, Warsash Maritime Centre and Ship Analytics have now introduced a monitoring system that provides a totally new approach to the use of real time simulation for training and operation evaluation, and allows a much greater degree of 'intelligent monitoring' to be incorporated into the control systems for real plant.

By taking advantage of the capabilities now offered by the latest computer technology, Warsash has developed a new approach to the use of 'Artificial Intelligence' which has enabled us to develop both a simulator which offers all the functionality of a classroom based system with the addition that it is capable of being operated in any location, and a monitoring system that can enhance the capability of any computer based control system.

Concentrating initially on the field of Liquid Cargo Operations, the new systems use the new techniques to encapsulate into a software module the experience of highly skilled personnel both in the actual operation of the appropriate ships/terminals and in the training of operators in cargo operations using standard classroom based simulators. The intelligence module can then monitor the data provided by a simulator or a computer based control system and provide feedback to the operators as would normally be forthcoming from an instructor or supervisor, without the need for their physical presence.

Some of the advantages that the new systems will provide include:

  • New tools that can be used to improve fleet, ship or plant operation both commercially and in the provision of safe working practices.
  • Ability to conduct more flexible and detailed training programs and provide them to a wider audience with less outlay.
  • More sophisticated monitoring systems which will provide for a much safer operating environment.

In addition, the system only requires the 'knowledge' of an expert to be captured and programmed once for a particular system (such as the operations of an oil tanker). The design allows this knowledge to be transferred to additional systems of the same type with a minimal reprogramming requirement hence new modules can be produced within very short periods of time.
